I randomly came across The Gooch from Scrubs in her musical duo Garfunkel & Oates. You can download their songs or watch their videos at their web site. Funny girls.
My mom was diagnosed with a cancerous tumor and is freaking out, rightfully so. But after the initial freak out; fact is you have to figure out how to deal with the hand dealt to you. It reminds me of a poem my parents had framed in their study long ago. The gist:
10% of life is made up of what happens to you.
90% of life is decided by how you react.
While combing through the thousands of links I have acquired over the years, I just happened to pull up this video of the Last Lecture by Randy Pausch. He was given months to live yet had the most wonderful outlook on his life. My mom’s prognosis looks really good; they caught the tumor in an early stage. But it’s still a good reminder of how precious life is and how wasteful not to enjoy it.
Full Lecture:
Much shorter reprised version on Oprah; still good but the full lecture above is worth watching:
I’ve been hit up for design work lately. I don’t mind at all, partly because it is for family and friends and partly because it keeps my skills sharp. But it made me think how often friends and family exploit one another for their talents. Exploit sounds harsh, but really what else would you call it?
My husband is frequently called upon to rescue computers in crisis; my brother to help put in landscaping elements; Mom, the CPA, to do taxes. A friend of ours is hit up routinely for his employee discount. A financial guru uncle is asked for advice during family dinners. A photography hobbyist friend is called on to shoot a wedding. The list of talents and favors goes on and on.
What’s the point of having family and friends if you can’t rely on them, right? I hope everyone takes a moment to realize how lucky they are to have such talented people among their crew. I sure am! Oh and maybe call them every now and then with no favor in mind.
My mother would sing to my brother and me a special little morning song to wake us up on school days. Something along the lines of:
good morning to you
good morning to you
we’re all in our places
with such shining faces…
I’m NOT a morning person and neither is my brother; much growling and snarling will come from us if stirred… so this little morning song wasn’t as cute and sweet to us as it probably should have been. Apparently it was effective though as it was sung quite often.
There is something to be said for tradition and I can not wait to annoy our future children with this version of a morning song! I’m already practicing it on my husband to his sheer and utter delight. hehe. Thanks to This is Dorm Life for this evil little tune!
